Catch up for a third series of STELLA on Sky 1 HD

Tuesday 28 August 2012

“This ten-part comedy drama from Ruth Jones is a total delight and further proof that Sky 1 is at the top of its game right now” – Heat

Sky 1 HD today announced the re-commission of a third series of STELLA (10 x 60’) and the very first Christmas special (1x60’), from Tidy Productions. The second series is currently filming in Wales after the first series’ debut was the second biggest UK comedy launch in multichannel history with the Sunday Telegraph (Seven) describing it as “quick-witted, understated and charming”.

The series has since gone on to become Sky 1’s most watched comedy to date forming parts of Sky 1’s Comedy Friday’s strand.

Creator, writer and star Ruth Jones earned a BAFTA® nomination for her portrayal of the title character STELLA in this warm, funny, down-to-earth family saga which gave us an authentic slice of the working-class Welsh Valleys. The Sun described Jones’ performance as “Littered with classic Ruth Jones observations and superb characters...one of the best comedy writers and performers of her generation..."

Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy, Sky Entertainment commented: “Stella was a huge success and with filming already going so well on series two I am thrilled Ruth will be returning to our customers’ screens for a third series. Stella has been a massive part of Sky’s comedy achievements over the last 18 months and we are very proud to have Ruth and Tidy Productions on board for another brilliant series.”

Ruth Jones added : "I feel that this third series commission is a vote of confidence in Tidy as an established production company that’ll be around for years to come."

David Peet, Managing Director and Series Producer, said: "We'll have produced more than 30 hours of comedy drama in less than 3 years and it's great to see that Tidy will be an ongoing partner with Sky as it leads the way investing in original British content."

By 2014, Sky expects to invest £600 million a year in British programmes across its portfolio of channels.  This commitment follows the success of home-grown content such as entertainment hits GOT TO DANCE, AN IDIOT ABROAD and A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, dramas such as STRIKE BACK and MAD DOGS, comedies such as TROLLIED, THE CAFE and SPY, for which its star Darren Boyd received both a BAFTA® Award and British Comedy Award, and factual shows such as ROSS KEMP EXTREME WORLD and the BAFTA-winning documentary FLYING MONSTERS 3D.

Series two of STELLA will air in January 2013 on Sky 1 HD and on the move with Sky Go.
