Inspiring action through Earth Hour

What will you be doing this Saturday? How about turning your lights off for Earth Hour?

As Head of Environment and Engagement it’s been great working with our business to turn the lights off for Earth Hour for the last two years. We’ll be supporting it again ourselves and for the first time this year also inspiring others to do the same. Our aim is to raise awareness of climate change with our people, customers and also with other businesses around the world.

WWF’s switch off for Earth Hour is a unique annual phenomenon that focuses the world’s attention on our amazing planet, and how we need to protect it. At 8.30pm on 23 March hundreds of millions of people will turn off their lights for one hour, on the same night, all across the world in a symbolic show of support. By joining millions in WWF’s campaign, we’re also showing our commitment ay Sky. Earth Hour is not only about saving an hour’s electricity. It’s something much bigger! It’s about inspiring everyone to take action.

Supporting Earth Hour is just one of the ways we’re tackling our environmental impact. I’ve worked at Sky since 2005 within the Bigger Picture team and over the last few years the business has changed beyond expectations. Our first big achievement was when Sky became the first carbon neutral media company in the world in 2006. This leadership move began our journey and in 2009 we set 10 challenging targets around minimising our business impacts from our operations, our products and our supply chain. Our new strategy which I introduced in my blog earlier in the year is about fewer impacts, better, more sustainable products, and a bigger reach, enabling more of our customers to take action on the environment and climate change. Our partnership with WWF also goes beyond support of Earth Hour.  We’ve been working together for the last three years, inspiring our customers to take action to help save one billion trees in the Amazon rainforest, through Sky Rainforest Rescue.
