Making Sky productions more sustainable
Making Sky productions more sustainable

At Sky, not only are we determined to create great TV for our customers, but also it’s really important to us that we go about making those new shows in a way that’s in keeping with Sky’s commitment to the environment.
This extends to the way we work with our production partners.
Since 2012, we’ve been the only UK broadcaster to insist on the use of the production-specific carbon calculator, Albert, every time we commission a new show. This means all production companies that work with us have to assess the environmental impacts of their programmes before we start work on them.
We’re moving even further with Albert+ which provides a detailed assessment about the environmental impact of a production, giving guidance to the programme team through every aspect of making a show and providing suggestions as to areas where they can improve what they do and make it even more sustainable.
We have already identified the new series of Trollied and Ross Kemp’s Extreme World as productions which will trial Albert+. We are busy working with other production companies and are looking to announce more and more Albert+ productions.
In July, Stuart Murphy, Director of Sky’s Entertainment channels, also announced our commitment to remove all polystyrene from all Sky Entertainment productions from September.
This new commitment will sit alongside the ‘Green Memo’ we issue to all cast and crew in the pre-production stages, which outlines Sky’s ambitions to make its productions as sustainable as possible and requests specific emission reductions against relevant KPIs.
We’re not just stopping there.
We’re proud that we’ve always taken a leading stance. Sky became the first media company to become carbon neutral in 2006 and our Sky Studios is the most sustainable broadcasting studios in Europe.
We want to take a real lead in sustainable production and we are working on a number of new initiatives.
We are always keen to hear any thoughts and ideas, so we’d love to hear from you about what more we can do.
