Making Sky the safest place for families

We want our customers to enjoy our content on air and online safely. We do this by providing effective and easy to use tools to protect families against inappropriate content and then combine this with education on online safety.

Last week, on the 10th February, Safer Internet Day was a great opportunity for us to do just that and promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for young people. It was great to see so many parts of Sky’s approach to online safety come together on the day.

To help raise awareness, we invited Internet Matters to feature on sky.com and ran a competition for five schools to win a special internet safety session run by Childnet International. We received over 200 entries through our Sky Academy Twitter and Facebook pages.

We also hosted Rutlish School, winners of Internet Matter’s internet safety song competition, at Sky Academy Skills Studios for a special session on cyberbullying and gave them the opportunity to record their internet safety song in front of the cameras.

Internet Matters, Sky Academy Skills Studios and our partnership with Childnet International are all ways in which we’re helping to raise awareness and educate families about staying safe online.

Internet Matters is an online information portal for parents which we set up with the other major ISPs in 2013, and an important way in which we’re providing information, advice and support for parents when it comes to internet safety for children.

Sky Academy Skills Studios and our partnership with Childnet are ways in which we’re raising awareness among young people. At Sky Academy Skills Studios young people create a TV news report on subjects they’re studying at school and cyberbullying is our most popular topic. Together with Childnet, we’re delivering workshops in schools about online safety across the country.

We also provide our customers with the necessary technology to help them stay safe online and onscreen. Sky Broadband Shield is an effective and easy-to-use tool to keep the whole household safe online and the family friendly settings on our set-top boxes gives them the power to control who can watch what, and when.

For parents and teachers, ensuring kids are safe online can at times be a difficult challenge. By providing both the right tools and the right knowledge, we’re offering protection for our customers so they enjoy an even greater experience of Sky.
