REPORTER: This is a city in mourning and we can now speak to the local MP for Glasgow Central, Anas Sarwar. Mr Sarwar, could you just sum up for me how people in this city have responded over the past couple of days to this tragedy?

ANAS SARWAR: Well clearly there has been a lot of shock and yesterday there was a huge amount of sadness at what’s happened but we have seen a sad situation in Glasgow, we have also seen the best of Glasgow in the last few days, people coming together to support our fellow Glaswegians at very difficult times. That’s why you saw the emergency services or passers-by actually supporting their fellow human beings, I think that just speaks volumes of human decency. Also huge condolences to obviously to PC Nelis, her family and also other families who have lost a loved one. This is obviously a really, really difficult period for people and we will pull together as one city.

REPORTER: That is how people have responded isn’t it, in the immediate aftermath, people helping the injured and certainly we are seeing people turning up in their dozens, I think we’re expecting hundreds. Is that how you think this city will cope with this disaster, by pulling together?

ANAS SARWAR: We in Glasgow have had times of difficulty before and any time we face any adversity we pull together as a city and we come out fighting and that’s what you’re seeing today, we are unified as one city. We had a special mass yesterday that saw the different parts of the community of Glasgow come together and you have seen the service today where again different parts of the community are coming together. I said before this city has got a slogan ‘People Make Glasgow’ and the last couple of days have proven why. It is people coming together to support their fellow man.

REPORTER: And a huge amount of praise for the emergency services and I think particularly people from Police Scotland who we have to remember lost three colleagues, some police officers at the scene have lost friends in this tragedy. What words do you have for the emergency services in the city?

ANAS SARWAR: We just can’t begin to thank them enough. These are brave men and women who put their own lives on the line to protect the lives of others and you only really see that … this is a sacrifice they make every day, not just in times like this, but every day in terms of protecting us and that is particularly so in the last couple of days and as I say, we just can’t thank them enough., particularly Police Scotland. Remember, these are officers where some of their friends and colleagues are part of the scene of tragedy but they are still getting on with their job in an exemplary manner and getting the situation under the control and protecting as many people as possible. It is just another great symbol of human kindness, another great symbol of this great city.

REPORTER: Anas Sarwar, the MP for Glasgow Central, thank you very much for joining me.
