ANNA JONES: Let’s get more now on the shootings in Copenhagen and I’m joined now on the phone by the Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen. Thanks very much indeed for talking to us today, so two people shot dead in your city, what’s your reaction?
FRANK JENSEN: I am horrified and deeply affected by the domestic events in Copenhagen during the last 24 hours and my worst fears have become reality with this violent and deadly attack on our city and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families in this difficult time.
AJ: Do you agree with your Prime Minister that this is almost certainly a terrorist attack?
FRANK JENSEN: Of course, it looks as if it is a very, very dramatic terrorist attack and I am very glad that our police and Federal Bureau have worked very hard, they have worked tirelessly to find the person or persons behind these attacks and this morning the police shot and killed a man who they believe to be responsible for the attacks.
AJ: That’s right, as you say they shot a man they believe to be the gunman and they say there is nothing to suggest there are other perpetrators in their view, are you reassured that the immediate danger is over?
FRANK JENSEN: Of course we don’t know but the police have been working very hard and they have been doing their job very well but we still don’t know the motive for the attack and I don’t want to use this time to speculate but this is time to stay united as Danes of Copenhagen, for our values and our democracy but I regard this as a horrifying and violent attack to democracy, our freedom of speech and the values that Denmark is founded upon.
AJ: Police have said that they are going to maintain a high presence in the city, what is it like in the city now?
FRANK JENSEN: As you know, Copenhagen is one of the most safe capital cities in the world and these terrible attacks do not and must not change that fact. I think Copenhageners this morning, of course they are all affected from these dramatic events over the last 24 hours because it’s not normal that we have gun fights in the streets in our capital city of Denmark, Copenhagen, and it must not be in the future for our city.
AJ: Well yes, I know that the advice overnight for people in the area was to stay indoors, what’s your advice now for the people of your city, of Copenhagen, do you advise people just to go about their usual Sunday activities?
FRANK JENSEN: My advice is to listen to what the police, their advice to what people are going to do but my advice as Mayor of the city is that all Copenhageners stand together and we have to stand together for our democracy and for our values. We have freedom of speech and we are very glad that all the people around the world are looking at Copenhagen now and we have to show them that we are not giving up our values, our democracy, our freedom of speech and they cannot use this complete violent attack and serious attack against us to change that fact.
AJ: Well Frank Jensen, Mayor of Copenhagen, we really appreciate your time today, thank you very much.
FRANK JENSEN: Thank you very much.
