Prime Minister says Yes to Sky News Leader's Debate

Sky News Presenter, Eamonn Holmes - EH Prime Minister, David Cameron - PM

EH - I’d like to hand you an invite to the next Sky News Leader’s Debate prior to the next election. Can we count you in?

PM - You certainly can. I thought Sky did a great job before the last election at garnering this debate about the debates. I hope they go ahead. My only contribution to this debate is I think now we have a five year fixed parliament we could start the debates before the election campagin. I felt last time, excellent as they were, I thought they took all the life out of the rest of the campaign because actually the media were only interested in the run up to the debate, the debate, the analysis of the debate and all those special parts of an election campagin, the regional tours, getting out and meeting people in the country, those big set piece interviews – they rather lost some of the luster. So that’s my contribution to the debate. I’m sure others will have something to say but I think TV debates are a great thing and I look forward to taking part.

EH - Very good. And do you know when I think talking about ‘others’? Know who I would I think would make it really fun? Nigel Farage. What do you think?

PM - Well, it’ll  be others for…I think basically these debates should be about people who have a prospect of becoming Prime Minister. That is what people really want to see is what would the government do? And that ‘s what the debates should be about. But look, others will have there views. I’m sure there will be a great negotiation, a big discussion, but I’ve given you my tuppeny ha’penny’s worth.
