Sky 1 scores a blinder with Rovers, a brand new comedy produced by Craig Cash

Thursday 9 July 2015

After gaining a following in front of the camera, Joe Wilkinson (Him & Her) and David Earl (Derek) have teamed up to pen a down-to-earth comedy about the fans of a local lower league football team Redbridge Rovers, produced by Jellylegs, the production company co-founded by Craig Cash (The Royle Family).

Starring Sue Johnston (The Royle Family),  Rovers promises to be an original take on the goings on of lower league football and will give audiences the opportunity to pull up a stool in the team’s clubhouse; the home for this one big family of supporters and their useless club.

Whilst there they will meet the matriarchal, hardworking and loose lipped Doreen (Johnston) who over the past quarter of a century has run the place. Her meat raffles are legendary and have kept punters coming through her doors all those years. They’ll also get to know obsessive fan Pete Mott, who likes nothing more than talking stats over the scratchings with his best mate Tel – only Tel has recently thrown Pete for a loop by coming out as gay and bringing his new boyfriend Mel to the club. Then there’s Pete’s young lodger Tom, who has got eyes for new barmaid Sam, bossy pensioner Francis and a whole host of other loveable eccentrics (including Bruce and Lee played by Earl and Wilkinson). All in all there’ll be a character who we can all relate to.

Craig Cash, Jellylegs Productions, commented: "It's great to be a part of Sky's ongoing commitment to comedy. Lucy and Adam continue to commission new writers, a bold move and one that can only be a good thing for the audience and the genre. In "Rovers" David and Joe have created a world that is both laugh out loud funny and as warm as toast. A series populated by great characters played by a brilliant cast. Six half hours of pure joy."

Sue Johnston, commented: "I've completely fallen in love with the world Joe and David have created in Rovers and I can't wait to start filming. And, of course, it will be a joy to be working with Craig Cash again."

Adam MacDonald, Director of Sky 1 commented: “They had me at ‘meat platter’.”

Rovers has been commissioned by Head of Comedy, Lucy Lumsden. The series will be executively produced by Lucy Ansbro and Craig Cash, directed by Craig Cash and the producer is Gill Isles.
