Sky Atlantic HD celebrates the very best in documentary film-making with coverage of The Grierson Awards 2013

(1 November 2013) Sky Atlantic HD will broadcast coverage of The Grierson Awards 2013 at 9pm on Friday 8th November, further demonstrating the channel’s commitment and ambition to showcase the greatest stories by some of the finest writers, directors and producers at work today.

 

Recognising and celebrating the very best in documentary film-making from across the globe, The Grierson Awards 2013 coverage will be broadcast in the week that Sky Atlantic Documentary Films, a season of brand new documentaries from award-winning filmmakers, launches on the channel.

 

The Grierson Awards commemorate pioneering Scottish documentary filmmaker John Grierson, the man widely regarded as the father of the documentary and established after his death in 1972, recognise and celebrate documentaries that have made a significant contribution to the genre.

 

Claudia Winkleman hosts this year’s star-studded ceremony as awards are given in a number of categories including Arts, History, Science and Contemporary at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

 

The 2013 shortlist includes some of the most talked about television of last year, including Sky Atlantic HD’s documentary Bradley Wiggins: A Year In Yellow, which has been nominated for the Open University award for Best Documentary on a Contemporary Theme – Domestic.

 

Acclaimed film-maker and producer John Battsek, whose credits include HBO’s Manhunt, which will premiere as part of Sky Atlantic Documentary Films in December, will be presented with the prestigious Coutts Grierson Trustees’ Award recognising outstanding contribution to the art or craft of documentary making at this year’s ceremony.

 

Sky Atlantic HD is spearheading Sky’s commitment to factual programming, as part of Sky’s significant commitment to original content with this major new investment in the production of feature-length documentary films for its customers. The films will be shown each year in two blocks of six, in Autumn and Spring, and will be directed and produced by some of the leading lights in the global documentary field.

 

The Grierson Awards 2013 airs Friday 8th November at 9pm on Sky Atlantic HD and on the move via Sky Go

 

The first season of Sky Atlantic Documentary Films launches with The Crash Reel on Tuesday 5th November at 9pm
