Sky Atlantic HD commission two major Cycling documentaries from Twofour Productions
As part of Sky’s investment in home grown content, Sky Atlantic HD have commissioned Twofour Productions to produce two documentaries focussing on the world of cycling, following some of the most high profile names in the sport.
BRITISH CYCLING: Road To glory (working title, 6 x 60’) and BRADLEY WIGGINS: TOUR OF DUTY (working title, 1 x 90’) were commissioned by Celia Taylor, Head of Factual, Sky, and will be executive produced by Andrew Mackenzie and Bridget Sneyd at Twofour Productions and Clare Handford at Sky.
With cycling more popular than ever and huge interest in this year’s Tour de France and Olympics, BRITISH Cycling: Road to GLORY (working title) will offer an insight into the inner workings and stars of both the professional road outfit Team Sky and the national British Cycling team,. It will lay bare the extraordinary physical, psychological and tactical dimensions of both professional cycling and the bid for continued Olympic success at London 2012. The six-part series will also feature key coaches behind the bid, including Dave Brailsford, Performance Director of British Cycling and Team Principal for Team Sky.
BRADLEY WIGGINS: TOUR OF DUTY will give a no-holds barred look at how one of Britain’s brightest sport stars balances his professional and personal life. Cameras will follow Olympic Gold medallist Wiggins across some of Europe’s toughest races as he trains for the Tour De France and attempts to be the first British rider to win cycling’s most iconic professional race. The 29-year old is already the highest placed British rider ever at the Tour de France - jointly with Robert Millar - after his 4th-place at the 2009 Tour. The one-off documentary will look to capture the personality of Wiggins as he trains and competes for the Tour, following his journey and speaking to those closest to him. The film will be directed by John Dower (Thriller in Manila).
Celia Taylor commented: “With these documentaries we want to shine a light on what will be an extremely exciting time in the world of cycling. BRITISH cycling: Road to glory (working title) will be a behind the scenes look at the riders who compete for Team Sky and their nation, whilst BRADLEY WIGGINS: TOUR OF DUTY will take us underneath the skin of a hugely successful sportsperson. We are thrilled to bring them to Sky Atlantic HD, the home of great storytelling from around the world.”
The documentaries form part of Sky Atlantic HD’s commissioning and acquisition strategy to bring the most compelling stories exclusively to Sky customers. Its stellar schedule includes Mad Men and Game of Thrones, plus upcoming UK-originations Great Britain: Our Story, the channel’s first foray into high-end factual, and Julia Davis and Kathy Burke comedies Hunderby and Walking + Talking.
The documentaries will exclusively air on Sky Atlantic HD and Sky Atlantic later this year. Following the addition of Sky Atlantic HD to Sky Go, customers will also be able to watch them both on the move on iPad, selected smartphones and laptops at no extra cost.
