Continuing to bring customers world-class comedy from the finest talent from both on and off screen, Sky Atlantic HD will debut the new, second series of Lena Dunham’s double Golden Globe® and Emmy® winning GIRLS at 10pm on Monday 14 January, just one day after its US premiere.
Accruing an ardent fan base, critical acclaim as well as award nominations and wins including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy at the 70th Golden Globes® awards, GIRLS’ brilliant first run blew a Lena Dunham-shaped hole in the televisual landscape. Now, its prodigious creator and star is set to deliver a sophomore season packed with more insightful humour, sexual mishaps and twentysomething tribulations.
Hannah (Lena Dunham) is seeing a new guy, but still feels responsible for Adam (Adam Driver), her bed-ridden ex, as he recovers from the fateful accident that ended season one. Disappointed at work, the recently single Marnie (Allison Williams) needs the support of her best friend and former roommate, yet the distance between them seems greater than ever. Jessa (Jemima Kirke) returns from her honeymoon, ready to plant new ideas in Hannah’s head. Newly experienced, Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) struggles to navigate the challenges of a shaky relationship with Ray (Alex Karpovsky).
Created by and starring Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture), the Golden Globe® and Emmy®-winning HBO series GIRLS takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of women in their early 20s. Dunham, Judd Apatow, Jenni Konner, Ilene S. Landress and Bruce Eric Kaplan executive produce the show, which kicks off its ten-episode second season on Monday, 14 January at 10pm, exclusively on Sky Atlantic HD and on the move via Sky Go.
Guest stars already lined up to appear in the second season of GIRLS include Community’s Donald Glover, Rita Wilson (It’s Complicated) as Marnie’s mum and Patrick Wilson (Young Adult) as hunky doctor Joshua. Chris O’Dowd (Moone Boy) will also return in the role of venture capitalist Thomas-John.
GIRLS forms part of Sky Atlantic HD’s broader comedy strategy to bring the smartest, most engaging content of this genre from both sides of the Atlantic exclusively to Sky customers. The channel’s stellar comedy line-up also includes Julia Davis’ British Comedy Award winning HUNDERBY, Armando Iannucci’s Emmy® -winning VEEP and the channel’s series of comedy shorts COMMON PEOPLE written by and starring some of the UK’s best-loved comedy talent including Johnny Vegas, Jessica Hynes and Katy Brand.
As part of Sky’s commitment to increase its investment in original British content by 50% over the next three years, the channel will continue to invest in and showcase bold, smart and grown up comedy, ensuring that the greatest comedy talent are given the creative freedom to make truly original, distinctive shows.
