Sky Atlantic to air Golden Globe winning series The Affair

Friday 20 March 2015

Sky have acquired the rights to the SHOWTIME® Golden Globe® Award winning drama The Affair to air exclusively on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland this May.  As part of the acquisition, Sky Atlantic will air both the first season and the recently announced second season of the critically acclaimed drama.

The Affair stars Dominic West (The Wire), who was nominated for a 2015 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series, Drama for his role in the series, and Ruth Wilson (Luther), who won the 2015 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series, Drama for her role. The series also stars Emmy® Award nominee Maura Tierney (ER) and Screen Actors Guild Award® nominee Joshua Jackson (Fringe).

The Affair explores the emotional and psychological effects of an extramarital affair. The provocative drama is told separately from the male and female perspectives, using the distinct memory biases to both misdirect and intrigue. Wilson plays Alison, a young woman waiting tables at a popular Hamptons diner, trying to piece her life back together in the wake of a tragedy. Her husband Cole (Jackson) struggles to keep it all together, with his wife and with the financially-strained ranch that has been in his family for generations.

Their emotionally-charged marriage becomes even more complicated when Alison begins an affair with Noah (West), a New York City public school teacher and aspiring novelist who is spending the summer at his in-laws’ estate out in the Hamptons. Tierney plays Helen, Noah's college sweetheart, best friend, mother of his children, lover and wife of 17 years.

Zai Bennett, Director of Sky Atlantic commented:

“I’m delighted we have secured The Affair for Sky Atlantic. Its intricate storytelling and phenomenal acting sit perfectly on the channel, further cementing our channel’s position as the home of quality drama in the UK.”

Stephen Tague, SVP Europe, CBS Studios International commented:

"The addition of The Affair to Sky's schedule builds on our long, successful relationship with the UK broadcaster. We are thrilled that The Affair will join an already powerful slate of CBS and SHOWTIME content  across Sky's entertainment channels, including Hawaii Five-0, NCIS: Los Angeles, Elementary and Ray Donovan."

Award-winning playwright and writer/producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment) wrote the original script from a story created with Hagai Levi. They first worked together on the American adaption of Levi's show, In Treatment. Treem and Levi both serve as executive producers and creators. Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) serves as executive producer and director, along with executive producer Eric Overmyer.

The Affair was acquired for Sky by Lucy Criddle, from Stephen Tague of CBS Studios International.
