Sky News Launches Mick Deane Memorial Scholarship
14 August 2014: Today Sky News is launching a scholarship in memory of cameraman, Mick Deane, who was killed in Egypt a year ago. The scholarship, open to students from the National Film & Television School, consists of a year’s placement at Sky News, working across various parts of the newsroom. The scholarship will begin in January 2015.
The student will receive mentoring from Sky News staff, as well as from Mick’s widow, Daniela Deane.
John Ryley, Head of Sky News, said: ‘Mick Deane was a wonderful and talented colleague, much missed by all at Sky News. He was a strong mentor to many young people at Sky and I hope this new scholarship in his memory will help to ensure his legacy continues, as well as offering a student the opportunity to gain real hands-on experience in a major and dynamic newsroom.’
Mick spent six years of his career in Hong Kong where Asia Pacific Vision in partnership with the Journalism and Media Studies Centre of the University of Hong Kong have also launched a scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to broadcast journalists and video professionals.
