Sky News Launches @SkyNewsWW1 to Commemorate the Great War

Sky News to tweet daily messages as if conflict were happening in the present day

4 February 2014: As part of the Sky News’ coverage of the centenary of World War One the channel has launched a twitter account, @SkyNewsWW1, and will tweet daily updates to followers on the events that took place from 1914 to 1918.

The account will officially go live on 28th June 2014, 100 years after Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. Sky News will draw on a variety of historical resources to tweet out a daily message focused on the military progress and set-backs that occurred 100 years ago. Events will include the start of conscription, the major battles, Christmas football matches in the trenches, and the Gallipoli Campaign.

John Ryley, Head of Sky News, commented: ‘This is a unique idea that will provide our audiences with a simple but compelling guide on the major, and some of the less well known, events of World War One. We hope to give our twitter followers a daily glimpse of what people had to endure 100 years ago to fight for the freedom we now have the privilege to enjoy.’

Twitter users can follow @SkyNewsWW1 from today.
