Sky Sports Living for Sport goes from strength to strength
It’s been a great past few weeks for our Sky Sports Living for Sport team.
Last week we were shortlisted in the prestigious Beyond Sport Awards, we celebrated ten years of grass-roots sporting success and we achieved our target of engaging with 1,500 UK secondary schools this academic year – that’s a third of all secondary schools in the UK.
This comes after the inspirational Olympic Gold medallist Katie Taylor helped us successfully launch Sky Sports Living for Sport in Ireland in May. It’s exciting to open up the programme to even more kids and we’re proud of the progress we’re making in reaching out to hundreds of Irish schools.
Founded in 2003 with our partner Youth Sport Trust, Sky Sports Living for Sport works with a range of mentors to engage schoolchildren in sport. Not only do kids improve their fitness, but they are given focus and the opportunity to learn key life skills, such as team work, discipline and project management.
This year alone, participating schools have had access to more than 3,000 athlete mentor visits, including Sky ambassador David Beckham, Jessica Ennis and Darren Campbell, and we’ll have encouraged more than 30,000 young people to take part in projects that help build life skills and raise aspirations through sport.
It’s a privilege to be working with so many truly inspiring people. I know we’re all still buzzing from Bedford Academy student Wayne Instrell (pictured) being named Student of the Year at the Sky Sports Living for Sport Awards in March. If you haven’t had a chance to hear Wayne’s moving story, you can watch a video of his time taking part in Sky Sports Living for Sport here.
Here’s to wishing the Sky Sports Living for Sport team all the best of luck this year. With our continued commitment to grassroots sports across the UK, I’m confident that there’s lots more in store for us in the future.
