The original crime family return to Sky Atlantic HD for the second season of THE BORGIAS
On Saturday 21 July at 9pm, renaissance crime drama THE BORGIAS will make its return to Sky Atlantic HD. Based on Italy’s notorious Borgias dynasty, Academy Award® winner Jeremy Irons (Elizabeth I, Brideshead Revisited) stars as Rodrigo Borgia, the manipulative patriarch of the Borgia family who ascends to the highest circles of power within Renaissance-era Italy. This epic drama series is created, executive produced and written by Academy Award® winning director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game).
The first season was nominated for six Primetime Emmys®, winning two, and star Jeremy Irons also garnered a Golden Globe® nomination for his performance as Pope Alexander VI, and the second season looks set to follow in its footsteps. The dark sophomore outing sees Pope Alexander VI struggling to hold on to his status as head of the Catholic church after buying, snatching, killing and deceiving his way to the top of Western Christendom. With help from his murderous son Cesare (Francois Arnaud) and tainted daughter Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger, Any Human Heart), the power-hungry Pope must defend against usurpers and rivals from without and within as 15th-century Italy descends into war.
THE BORGIAS also stars David Oakes (The Pillars of the Earth) as Rodrigo’s other son Juan Borgia, Joanne Whalley (Scandal) as Rodrigo’s mistress and the mother of his children, Lotte Verbeek as Giulia Farnese and Colm Feore (24) as Cardinal Della Rovere.
THE BORGIAS forms part of Sky Atlantic HD’s commissioning and acquisition strategy to bring the most compelling stories exclusively to Sky customers. Its stellar schedule includes Mad Men and Game of Thrones, plus upcoming UK-originations The British, the channel’s first foray into high-end factual, and Julia Davis and Kathy Burke comedies Hunderby and Walking + Talking.
THE BORGIAS premieres on Sky Atlantic HD on Saturday 21 July at 9pm. Following the addition of Sky Atlantic HD to Sky Go, customers will also be able to watch THE BORGIAS on the move on iPad, selected smartphones and laptops at no extra cost.
