Matchday Ready: Ella Toone & Keely Hodgkinson Star in New WSL Series

Sky Sports has launched Minus 1, a new social series that pairs the biggest players from the Barclays Women’s Super League with personalities from sport, music, culture and beyond.
Dropping ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby, the first episode sees childhood friends, two-time European champion Ella Toone and Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, spend time together at Manchester United’s training ground.
From dreaded sports massages to dressing room nerves, the pair delve into the final touches that go into getting matchday ready and compare what elite level preparation looks like for them.
Ella Toone said: “It was so nice to catch up with Keely again and show her what a day in a life looks like for me. There are obvious similarities in preparation, but you can see just how tough it can be working as an individual versus being a part of a team. Hopefully the series will allow fans to see all the unseen little moments that go into making us shine on the pitch.”
Minus 1 offers an authentic, behind-the-scenes glimpse at the lives of players in the build-up to matchdays, showcasing their personalities outside of the 90 minutes. Whether it’s a favourite pre-match meal, superstition or routine they can’t live without, the series aims to uncover what makes the game’s best players tick when they’re not on the pitch.
Minus 1 will primarily live as short-form content on Sky Sports’ social channels across the season with Ella Toone’s episode live on the Sky Sports WSL TikTok channel.
Sky Sports is the home of the WSL, broadcasting 90% of all matches, with the action also available on streaming service NOW.
As the leading investor in women’s sports rights in the UK, Sky Sports accounted for nearly 80% of all televised women's sport in the UK in 2025. Total viewing for last year was up 25% across over 4,000 hours of live coverage.
