Sky Kids app to make summer holiday travelling even easier

Wednesday 20 July 2016

“Are we there yet? How much longer? I’m bored.”  These will be familiar phrases to any parent travelling with their kids during summer holidays. The destination might be fun, but getting there can be an ordeal with longer journeys and the inevitable delays causing mutiny in the passenger seats. That’s where Sky Kids can help with its latest update.

From today, the Sky Kids app lets customers with Sky Go Extra or Sky Multiscreen download their kids’ favourite shows to watch on their tablets, wherever you are, even with no Wi-Fi. So while you’re in the midst of a traffic jam the little ones in the back are entertained, giving those in the front enough peace and quiet to make those important holiday decisions – beach or cocktails?  Or both?

We’ve been really pleased with the response to the app from customers and their kids since it launched earlier this year. We’ve seen hundreds of thousands of households download the app, streaming over 15 million episodes so far.

Home to the widest range of the most popular Kids TV, there’s always something for kids to enjoy whether that’s Nick Jr.’s Paw Patrol, Boomerang’s Top Cat, Milkshake!’s Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom or Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time.

And they will soon be joined by children’s TV legend Morph, who is set to make his debut on the Sky Kids app later this autumn in brand new exclusive episodes along with specially created children’s versions of Sky 1’s popular science panel show Duck Quacks Don’t Echo: Kids and wildlife documentary series Big Cats, An Amazing Animal Family. There are also plans for exclusive programming aimed at kids from Sky Sports to drive interest and encourage participation as well as exciting short form content from leading Multi-Channel Networks (MCNs) which will include nursery rhymes and music.

We have also introduced a Sleep Mode feature which gives parents the ability to choose how much is enough screen time for their child, and set individual time limits.  This puts the parent in control and takes the friction out of a common family issue, particularly around bedtime.

When Sleep Mode is activated kids get a five minute warning that it’s nearly rest time and then five minutes later their favourite Sky Buddy appears, sleeping on the screen until it’s time to wake up again.

Sky Kids is available to download from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store on compatible tablets. The app will work on 3G/4G and Wi-Fi and is available for customers with the Sky Family or Variety bundle or Sky Q at no extra cost to their subscription. Download is available to customers with Sky Go Extra, Sky Multiscreen or a Sky Q subscription, and available over Wi-Fi only.
